The Chicago Black Inventors are currently planning their Third Annual Inventors Conference titled “Innovation, Patents & Profits: Commercializing Your Dream” . Last year’s Annual Conference hosted at the Illinois Institute of Technology provided over 300 attendees a unique opportunity to learn from experts, share their ideas with others and see new products. This year they plan to be filled to capacity (800 seats).
As America is revitalizing its leadership role globally in innovation, the Chicago Black Inventors, NFP (CBI) is part of today’s national campaign to win the future in economic development in underserved communities. Their goal is to spur and support innovation within these communities by providing inventors, innovators and entrepreneurs with educational resources, creditable service providers, and business development support. Currently, CBI provides these services to a membership base drawn largely from minority areas in 26 states.
The 2011 Annual Conference will be held on October 22, 2011 and include the following components:
- Transforming Products, Technology & Financial Capital Into Economic Growth – Morning Keynote Speaker Kedma Ough, (Executive Director, (Micro-Inventors Program of Oregon/MIPO)started MIPO as a non-profit organization in Oregon which is funded and supported through the Lemelson Foundation. Kedma works with entrepreneurs to move their inventions and conceptual models toward commercialization or licensing ventures. In Oregon, Ough has been sought as an expert in conducting feasibility assessments for firms with a specific focus on industry analysis, marketing, sales development, and business restructuring. In 2008, Ough was the recipient of Oregon’s SBA Women’s Champion of the Year award and hired as a small business expert for Wells Fargo National Webinar on Funding Sources for Women and Minority-owned Firms. Kedma Ough received her Master’s in Business Administration degree through Troy State University in 2002,and has held leadership positions at MCI WorldCom, US Bank, Arizona’s Women’s Business Center, and University of Arizona.
- Inventor Awards Luncheon – Sharon Barner, Foley & Lardner, LLP and former Deputy Director of the US Patent and Trademark Office will be the luncheon keynote speaker on the role of government, academia and industry to raise awareness of the importance of intellectual property and the positive impact it has on a nation’s economic, social and cultural development. 2010 Chicago Innovations Awards winner James Patrick, CEO of Smart Medical Technology, Inc. will be honored for his Liftaem Lateral Patient Transfer System.
- Entrepreneurship Development – The Afternoon Conference keynote speaker will feature Stephen Key who has successfully licensed more than twenty simple ideas that have generated billions of dollars of revenue. Following Stephen will be an educational panel of patent attorneys and management consultants to provide planning advice, identify business opportunities and make structural decisions, target market opportunities, and negotiate licensing and partnership agreements.
